Vocational Training

92% of unemployed Kenyans under the age of 30 have no vocational or professional skills.” World Bank

Very few jobs are available in the local economy, and although many children here do not even have access to primary school education, graduating from primary school is not enough to obtain a job that can lift them out of poverty.

To improve their chances for future employment ACTION THIS DAY is initiating vocational training programs for the students to enhance their competitive skills:

  • A pilot program will be launched in Term 3 of the 2011 school year to make students IT literate. IT training will become a mandatory subject of the Kookaburra Community School in 2012.
  • The tourism market is large in the Mombasa area, which offers opportunities for skilled artists to sell their merchandise. In 2012 ACTION THIS DAY will launch an arts program in cooperation with a local artist to provide students with these useful skills.
  • ACTION THIS DAY will purchase a number of sewing machines to launch a sewing program in 2012. Sewing skills can be applied both in the local economy as well as the tourist economy.
  • Once land has been purchased, ACTION THIS DAY will start a small-scale farming programme to produce food for the students but also to enable the students to learn about farming.

Adult education

“The average parent of children at the Kookkaburra Community School has not completed primary school.”Recent survey results

ACTION THIS DAY is a community based organisation, and hence seeks to improve the lives not only of the disadvantaged children but also of the disadvantaged adults in the community. Introducing evening classes for adults in the community in English and IT will improve community skills and livelihoods.

Results of a recent survey confirmed that parents believed courses could improve their livelihood.

85% parents were interested in English language courses at school. 60% of women also mentioned that having tailoring courses would also benefit their livelihoods. ACTION THIS DAY will introduce sewing training for the students at Kookkaburra Community School, but may now explore possibilities of extending this to the wider community.

The classes will involve a small fee that will help make the project sustainable.
