ACTION THIS DAY

ACTION THIS DAY is establishing a number of income generating projects to achieve real sustainability in the long-term:

1. Solar panel ventures

ACTION THIS DAY will acquire solar panels to support the following ventures:

• Internet centre: dual purpose of training children and adults IT skills and generating revenue from internet usage;
• Mobile charging stations: Fee-based supply of power for community members with no access to power to charge their mobile phones.
• Adult education: There is a significant need and desire amongst adults in the local community to obtain further education particularly in English and IT. Generating our own power will enable ACTION THIS DAY to run classes after hours in return for small fees.

2. Project tours for tourists

Partnerships with regional hotels and tour operators will generate funds through fees and donations. It will also introduce the opportunity of selling local arts & crafts to tourists who want to contribute to the local community during their holiday. Tourism is one of Kenya’s most successful industries and the nearby beaches along the Eastern coast are one of the country’s main tourist destinations.

3. Dual-purpose bus

Purchase a minibus to be used as a school bus. Outside of school purposes, the vehicle can be rented out to generate income.

4.  Small-scale farming

Small-scale farming will mainly be done for subsistence, but any surplus will be sold to generate income for the project.

Based on extensive research ACTION THIS DAY estimates that these income-generating projects will be able to generate at least 60% of the income required to make the project self-sustainable.
